Fake Friends & Empty Promises: Why I’m Done Counting on People
I’m just gonna say it — I’m done. Completely done with these fake-ass friends who only show up when it benefits them. The ones who claim they’ve got your back until you actually need it. Then suddenly, they’ve all got “plans,” “things going on,” or “they’ll call you back later.” Spoiler alert — they never do.
So here I am again, standing knee-deep in another mess on this little homestead of mine. The back of my property has grown up so high it’s about even with the roof of the trailer now. And to top it off, the septic tank — the one that came with the place when I moved in — is now full and starting to stink. We’ve been here a little over five years, and lately when I step outside, it’s like getting slapped in the face with a smell you can’t forget.
Here’s the kicker — the septic people can’t even get to it because of how grown up everything is back there. I needed help clearing it out. So when a “friend” of almost 18 years told me he needed help at his place too, I thought, perfect. We’ll help each other out, right? I’ll pitch in at his house, and he can come over and help me clear the back of my property. Sounded like a good deal.
But when it came time for him to actually show up — crickets. No calls, no texts, no nothing. Just another empty promise and me left sitting here staring at the problem that’s not getting any smaller. That’s when it hit me — I’m done depending on anybody but myself.
I’ve bent over backward for people who wouldn’t lift a finger for me. And for what? To be disappointed again and again? No thanks. From now on, I’ll figure things out the hard way if I have to. Because the truth is, most people don’t mean what they say anymore.
There’s only one real friend I’ve got — my girl Katie. She’s never once let me down. We’ve had each other’s backs through every mess life’s thrown at us. She moved away for a while, and I swear it’s been like losing my right arm. Hopefully, she’ll be back soon, and we can make a plan to get the hell out of here together.
Just me, Katie, and her man — he’s a little crazy, sure, but at least he’s a hard worker. And these days, that’s worth more than all the empty promises in the world.
